How do vocoders work2/17/2023 Some vocoders use 12 bands, some 24, some other amounts. The signal of the modulator is filtered by a number of parallel fixed frequency bandpass filters which divided up the audible spectrum more or less evenly. The first processing step is to analyze the modulator. You have one signal that you want to control your sound with, your modulator (usually human voice) and another signal that you want to actually hear, the carrier, (usually a synthesizer). The goal is to take the frequency and amp envelope characteristics of one sound source and apply it to another sound source.
